The Center Director is a Professor in Environmental Health with specialization in environmental epidemiology, exposure science, waste management and assessment of the fate of contaminants in the environment. A former Provost of the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences, he has over 10 years experience serving in senior leadership at university management as well as with a track record leading multi-institutional and multi-country projects across continents. Julius Fobil has conducted pioneering research on artisanal mining and electronic waste problems in West and Central Africa, and is one of the most published worldwide on this topic. He was MPIs of the paired grant nos: R24TW009497-01, U2RTW010110-01/5U01TW010101) and Canada’s International Development Research Center (IDRC) (grant no. 108121-001) as well as administrative supplement no. U01TW010103-05S1: ½ West Africa-Michigan CHARTER I & II for GEOHealth that established the West Africa Center for Global Environmental & Occupational. Julius Fobil is the founding Director and serves as coordinating and administrative focal point in delivering Center’s activities in Ghana and across West and Central Africa region.
